U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday the U.S. has “`serious concerns” about the conduct of Russia’s parliamentary elections.
She said “the Russian people, like people everywhere, deserve the right to have their voices heard and their votes counted. That means they deserve free, fair, transparent elections and leaders who are accountable to them.”
When it comes to deficits of democracy, and a lack of accountable leadership, Clinton would do better to look at America:
- Young people exercising their constitutional rights to protest against the disgusting, vile, anti-capitalist and unconstitutional bailouts of Wall Street financials are being pepper sprayed, beaten down to the ground and stamped on.
- The American Senate passed the NDAA — an act that authorises the military to arrest and indefinitely detain any citizen without trial, and that defines the entire United States as a battlefield.
- Banks and Washington insiders get pumped flush with cash while wider society remains in the throes of a devastating contractionary depression and crippling unemployment.
- The Guantanamo Bay detention camp remains open, almost three years after Obama pledged it would be closed.
- No Bush administration figure has been prosecuted for violating the Constitution and the Geneva Convention by authorising torture.
- Obama continues to renew the illiberal, reactionary, unconstitutional and widely-abused Patriot Act, a piece of legislation that mandates mass surveillance of Americans in violation of the 4th and 5th Amendments.
While it is impossible to hold up Russia under Putin as a paradigm of human rights and democracy, America today can hardly consider itself any better.
Of course, this isn’t really about democracy.
From the Guardian:
Vladimir Putin has accused the US of encouraging the protests over Russia‘s parliamentary election and warned of a wider crackdown on unrest.
The Russian prime minister said Hillary Clinton, the US secretary of state, “gave a signal” to Kremlin opponents by describing the country’s parliamentary election as rigged. “They heard this signal and with the support of the US state department began their active work,” he said.
Russia is a mineral- and resource-rich nation with the largest landmass in the world. Quite a prize.
Of course, Putin could stop rigging elections, killing opponents and altering the constitution to maintain the reins on power. And yes, Hilary is a hypocrite.
Putin is a tyrant, but he does have a genuine depth of support. Perhaps more concerning for the West is that the party that really seems to be challenging Putin are the Communists, who are even less compromising!
Since when has Putin become a tyrant, may I ask? FYI, pple in Russia have more freedom than pple in the US – that’s for sure!
They for one can’t be arrested without charges like it happens in the US, and can generally do whatever the hell they want – and say whatever they want about whoever including their own government.
There are dozens of NGO’s financed from abroad working freely, whereas in US they’d be classified as foreign spy network and held under strict control.
Putin is as much of a tyrant as Dick Cheney and George Bush, in the sense that they both put their friends’ interests above that of the nation at large.
Neither nation is a full tyranny, of course — while there is certainly free speech in Russia, there is also free speech and government criticism in America — if there was not people like Alex Jones and Gerald Celente would be in prison.
Of course, as someone who does not believe in unipolarity, I think Putin acts as an important counterweight to the American empire. That is why I would be sad to see Putin & United Russia deposed from power, and that is also why Hillary Clinton, etc, are so keen to destabilise the Russian establishment.
Putin was recently awarded the Confucius peace prize for his attempts to stop NATO’s bombardment of Libya after they overstepped the mark from a no-fly zone to regime change. I think that was a fair assessment, and in that regard Putin is deserving of much praise.
I am just trying to be fair to everyone. Nobody is perfect, and everyone deserves some criticism.
I just about vomited when I heard her lecturing the Russians the way she did. The arrogance of the American elite knows no bounds. Certainly Russia is corrupt, but what about the U.S.? At least the Russians know the score, unlike the pitiful Americans who still look up to those who are robbing them. It just makes me ashamed to think she is over there speaking for the rest of us.
“Let he who is without sin cast the first stone….”
Couldn’t have said it better myself.
americans cant solve their own problems bt still dictate the world……cheapsters!!!
What do you think would happen if an Iranian drone was shot down from deep within American soil? However it’s no problem if we do it to them. The double standard is so stark whether you talk about democracy, military intrusion or financial terrorism
I wonder if people like Hillary Clinton actually believe they have the moral high ground or they are openly aware of their hypocrisy and just have not conscience?
The Russians should sponsor OWS and lecture the USA on Political corruption. The CIA backed the Orange Revolution in Ukraine, and has been sponsoring protesters ever since.
Hillary is out of her depth. Putin is an Expert in European Law.
Hillary couldn’t even berate Bill in public, for her own slimey political aspirations. She is devoid of humanism.
When I heard she ordered a Ukrainian airport to use their entire years supply of antifreeze, so she could take off, and not wait one day I lost all respect for her.
Like I said on other posts I am pulling money out of the banks and putting into a private vault I can access. I don’t like where this political posturing is heading.
Russia Today is more reliable than US. Media!
You couldn’t make this stuff up.
